Neighborhood Plans
On Monday, September 8, 5:30 p.m., the Planning, Land Use and Neighborhoods Committee will hold a public hearing in City Council Chambers to hear public comment on the proposal to update neighborhood plans. In 1999, the Council approved 38 neighborhood plans created by nearly 20,000 citizens. The plans identify actions needed to ensure that each neighborhood will continue to thrive and improve as Seattle grows over the next 20 years. Now the Committee is considering updating the plans as they reach mid-life. Councilmember Sally J. Clark, the Committees chair, said, "Ultimately, updating the neighborhood plans is a chance for us all to recommit to the vision of safe, affordable, sustainable neighborhoods for ourselves and as a legacy."
Based on community input and quality, good-faith staff work, we now have three documents. Council will consider:

Sidewalk Cafés
On Monday, September 8, 2:00 p.m., the Full Council will take action on the proposal to simplify the procedure for authorizing sidewalk cafés. There are currently 225 sidewalk cafés in the city of Seattle. This proposed legislation will encourage more sidewalk cafés throughout the city by overhauling the permitting procedures to use city sidewalk space. Under this proposal, the permitting process will move from the Department of Planning and Development to the Department of Transportation and there will be significant improvements offered on fees, processing times and design standards. Councilmember Jan Drago, chair of the Transportation Committee, said, "Enjoyable public spaces, like sidewalk cafés, enhance the character and quality of life of Seattle's neighborhoods."
