The Washington Park Arboretum is a beautiful 200-acre park on the shore of Lake Washington. Known for its beautiful vegetation, the Arboretum is also home to the Japanese Garden, with its traditional Tea House. You can rent a canoe at the University Boat House or just have a picnic out on the grass.
In the winter, look for red twig dogwoods, bright berries on evergreen and deciduous hollies, delicate yellow and white flowers on witch hazels and frosty green foliage on groundcovers and vines. A must-see: the Joseph Witt Winter Garden, just south of the Graham Visitors Center. Sun-drenched on clear days, the Winter Garden is one of the Northwest's cold-weather delights. Pick up a plant list in the GVC lobby.
Among the Arboretum's 40,000 trees, shrubs and vines, more than 10,000 are catalogued in collections; 4,600 different species cultivated varieties from around the world; 750 of the taxa collected in the wild; 139 plants on the endangered species list. 95% of the Arboretum's collections are on display.
